Opting out of military recruiting for your children
The "PatriotII" Act, so-called, provides that unless a parent specifically opts out, the school must allow military recruiters to contact their children. The purpose of the letter below is to make it easy for parents to opt out, using the provision for doing so built into the Act.
A Word document with the same wording, allowing personal tailoring (inserting your return address and the name of your school official, etc.) is available here.
Dear School Administrator:
This letter is to inform you that I wish to exercise my rights under section 9528 of the No Child Left Behind Act, and hereby request that no information about my child (including name, address and telephone) be disclosed to any military recruiter or any institutions of higher learning without my prior written consent. The right of privacy concerning educational records is also recognized by the Family Educational & Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), which allows me to withhold consent to the disclosure of directory information about my child to military recruiters. Accordingly, I request that you do not disclose my child's name, address and telephone to military recruiters without my prior permission.
